The Harvey Prize is awarded annually in a variety of disciplines within the categories of Science & Technology and Human Health. The Harvey Prize has also been awarded for Contribution to Peace in the Middle East.

Harvey Prize winners are selected by a council of world-renowned scientists and experts in each field through a rigorous selection process. The Harvey Prize Council, comprised of the president of the Technion, one vice-president, dean of the graduate school, two representatives of both the Israel National Academy of Science and the Technion Senate, receives all nominations.

The Harvey Prize is derived from a donation made by the Lena P. Harvey Foundation to the American Technion Society in September 1971. Two awards of $ USD 75,000 each are made annually. The prize winners receive their awards at the Technion.

The Australian Government announced the creation of a new scheme, the Super Science Fellowships, as a part of the Australian Government’s new $1.1 billion Super Science Initiative, which is helping to build a stronger higher education and innovation system for the 21st century. The aim of the Super Science Fellowships is to attract and retain outstanding early-career researchers in three key areas: space and astronomy; marine and climate; and future industries.

In 2009, the Super Science Fellowships will offer three-year fellowships, funded up to $72,500 a year plus 28% on-costs, to 100 outstanding Australian and international early-career researchers. Of the 100 fellowships on offer, 50 fellowships may be awarded in Round One for funding commencing in 2010, and a further 50 fellowships may be awarded in Round Two for funding commencing in 2011. One call for Proposals for the Super Science Fellowships scheme will be made by the Australian Research Council. Proposals for both Round One and Round Two must be submitted within this call.

Super Science Fellowships will be applied for, and awarded directly to, Administering Organisations, who must then undertake a process of competitive national and international recruitment to fill the fellowship positions.

A Proposal may be submitted only by an Eligible Organisation linked to existing Super Science funding (for example, National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Scheme funding within a theme area); and/or be involved in an ARC Centre of Excellence, strategic priority of a Publicly Funded Research Agency and/or CRC within one or more of the key theme areas.

In addition to the Australian Research Council’s involvement, each researcher’s Administering Organisation and/or Host Organisation(s) must also provide each Super Science Fellow with a minimum of AUD$20,000 cash for each of the three years of the fellowship, to support the research project.

A maximum of three Super Science Fellowships may be requested by an Administering Organisation in a single Proposal for each targeted discipline and round.

Please note: The Super Science Fellowships scheme does not support Medical and Dental research.

The purpose of this program is to deepen mutual understanding and to establish closer relations between Japan and other countries while promoting intellectual exchange worldwide. This program provides grants to partially cover the expenses of implementing such projects as international conferences, symposia, seminars, workshops etc., to contribute to intellectual collaboration worldwide.

Collective quests for a new set of societal values are already evident in those general trends that yearn for work-life balance, eco-friendly lifestyle, or for socially responsible corporations. This year's grant program has the following non-exclusive priority areas:

Diversified society and public tolerance

Peace-building and culture

Environment and culture

Social values of science and technology

International governance and economic prosperity

In addition, a special attention will also be given to those attempts to broaden and/or enrich the areas of Japanese studies through comparative and interdisciplinary approaches.

The Dan David Prize is a joint international enterprise, endowed by the Dan David Foundation and headquartered at Tel Aviv University.

The Dan David Prize recognizes and encourages innovative and interdisciplinary research that cuts across traditional boundaries and paradigms. It aims to foster universal values of excellence, creativity, justice, democracy and progress and to promote the scientific, technological and humanistic achievements that advance and improve our world.

The Dan David Prize covers three time dimensions - Past, Present and Future - that represent realms of human achievement. Each year the International Board chooses one field within each time dimension. Following a review process by independent Review Commitees comprised of renowned scholars and professionals, the International Board then chooses the laureates for each field.

The Past refers to fields that expand knowledge of former times.
The Present recognizes achievements that shape and enrich society today.
The Future focuses on breakthroughs that hold great promise for improvement of our world.

Three prizes of one million US dollars each are granted annually in the fields chosen for the three time dimensions. The prizes are granted to individuals or institutions with proven, exceptional, distinct excellence in the sciences, arts, and humanities that have made an outstanding contribution to humanity.

The Centre for Health Advancement established a Health Promotion Demonstration Research Grants Scheme (DRGS) in 2000. The Scheme funds Area Health Services to conduct rigorously designed health promotion intervention research. It is a priority-driven research scheme that primarily funds practice-based effectiveness research. This type of research is rarely funded through other existing public health research schemes.

The aims of the Scheme are to:

Build an evidence-base to support policy development in Department priority areas of promotion of healthy weight, prevention of injurious falls amongst older people, and tobacco control

Contribute to the knowledge base for health promotion

In addition, the Scheme is designed to:

Develop partnerships for health promotion research between Area Health Services and Universities

Develop partnerships for health with sectors and organisations outside of the health sector eg. local government, education, non-government organisations

Encourage health promotion research across the whole health sector

Enhance and enable practice-based, health promotion intervention research

This Individual Research Grants overview details the funding priorities and procedures of the CDRF. Funding Priorities include:

Studying strategies that may promote neuronal growth and survival, encourage the formation of synapses, enhance the production of myelin, restore conduction capabilities, or may otherwise lead to restoration of the compromised circuitry in the acutely and chronically injured spinal cord.

Evaluating the efficacy of drugs or other interventions that protect against secondary neuronal injury or provide insight into the mechanisms causing such damage.

Defining anatomical characteristics of spinal cord injury in well-defined animal models and in the human spinal cord, specifically documenting the neuronal systems that are most vulnerable to spinal cord injury and the functional losses occurring as a result.

Elucidating the biological mechanisms underlying approaches to improve concomitant functions affected by spinal cord injury, (e.g., bladder function, sexual function) and alleviate chronic pain and spasticity.

    <eligibility>
Applications will be accepted only from those with a PhD, MD, or other equivalent professional degree, employed at a qualifying research institution.
</eligibility>

The Honourable Kate Ellis MP, Minister for Youth, Sport, Early Childhood Education and Child Care recently released a report titled ‘The State of Australia’s Young People’, which reveals some alarming social and health issues faced by teenagers and young adults in Australia. Alcohol misuse underpins many of these key concerns: mental health disorders, injury and hospitalisation due to acute intoxication, violent crime, and social exclusion (feeling disconnected from community or family).
The CEO of AER has met with the Minister’s office and has been invited to consult them on the National Strategy for Young People in relation to alcohol and extends an invitaion to join AER in engaging with Australia’s young people in a number of ways:

The Indo-Australian Fund for Scientific and Technological Cooperation (Indo-Australian S&T Fund) is jointly managed by the Australian Government Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research and the Indian Department of Science and Technology (DST).

The Indo-Australian S&T Fund provides support on a competitive basis for collaborative research activities and workshops. Projects may range from short international visits to more complex projects spanning up to 3 years.

The maximum amount of funding that can be awarded to a successful project by the Australian Government has been capped at $300,000 (GST exclusive). This maximum amount must be taken into account when drafting the project plan and budget.

For Round Four, the Governments of Australia and India have agreed to introduce a higher cap of $400,000 (GST exclusive) for projects that can demonstrate at least one active ‘end user’ partner.

Both the Australian and Indian governments wish to increase the level of industry and other ‘end user’ engagement in publicly funded research for either commercial or public good outcomes. The end user emphasis highlights the interest of both the Australian and Indian Governments in seeing the results of research both applied and utilised by end users.

The higher cap is intended to provide an incentive to pursue applied research and engage industry and other end user partners. Examples of an ‘end user’ partner include: for-profit industry bodies and companies, not-for-profit organisations, non-government organisations and public sector agencies.

Where a project is awarded at the higher cap, funding may also be used to support activities including: prototyping, commercialisation, product design and testing, and initial manufacture.

Applications will only be accepted in the bilaterally agreed areas of:

Agricultural research;

Astronomy and Astrophysics;
