Two scholarships are being offered by the Discipline of Biomedical Science, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Sydney, with the participating Industry Partners being the Australia Council for the Arts and the eight major orchestras of Australia. The scholarships are for suitable applicants with a background in medicine, physiotherapy, psychology, or public health who have an interest and/or experience in working in occupational health and injury surveillance, and any background in music or working with musicians.

Each of the successful PhD candidates will work as part of a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team consisting of university academics, psychologists, epidemiologists, occupational physicians, physiotherapists and other health and medical experts.

Project Summary: Effective occupational health practices within the professional orchestra workplace are urgently needed. This project will identify injury risk factors and predictors of injury, trial targeted interventions designed to better manage and prevent injury, and profile the psychological and physical health of professional musicians working within the eight premier state orchestras of Australia. This project aims to develop, implement and evaluate comprehensive multidisciplinary interventions to reduce the current unacceptably high rate of injury in this population and to support musicians in the management of psychological issues such as music performance anxiety and occupational stress. This project will provide an international benchmark for injury risk assessment and management within the orchestral workplace, assessment of physical and mental health of professional musicians and track injury trajectories, thereby facilitating the development of effective Occupational Health and Safety policies for professional Australian orchestral musicians at risk of a prematurely shortened career due to injury.

It is proposed that the successful PhD candidates would focus their research within one of the following areas:

Epidemiological research with a focus on injury surveillance.
This project involves several components including a longitudinal population cohort study that will clarify causal factors in injury. The first stage will be collating baseline measures of current physical and psychological health status. The second stage involves a longitudinal study involving regular injury surveillance monitoring (Study 1) and identifying priority risk factors that will be targeted by specifically designed intervention trials (Study 2).

Clinical physiotherapy research on injury prevention and management intervention trials.
By analyzing the results from stage 1 and 2, intervention trials will be designed and run to identify effective injury prevention and management strategies in professional orchestral musicians and to evaluate the short and long term effects of these interventions.

Qualitative and clinical psychology research with a focus on music performance anxiety
Implement intervention trials aiming to target musicians who suffer high levels of music performance anxiety and investigate other psychosocial risk factors such as occupational stress. Using the results of the baseline survey, the ongoing surveillance data in the psychosocial area and existing literature, interventions with a selection of professional musicians will be developed, implemented and evaluated.

The successful applicant will have qualifications and experience in any of the following: physiotherapy, psychology, epidemiology and public health; occupational medicine or equivalent. S/he may select to work in one of the above defined areas. They will ideally have experience in one or more of the following areas: survey design and implementation; injury surveillance and injury management, and will have knowledge of applied univariate and multivariate statistics to analyse complex sets of data. Experience in or knowledge of music and/or of musician related health issues would be an advantage.

Queries regarding the project should be directed to Dr Bronwen Ackermann, School of Medical Sciences, Room L111 Cumberland Campus C42, The University of Sydney, Lidcombe NSW 2141 (Phone: 02 9531 9472; Fax: 02 9531 9520; Email: b.ackermann@usyd.edu.au).

    <eligibility>
Applicants must have a First Class Honours degree or equivalent, or a Masters Degree, or have extensive clinical experience in an appropriate discipline. Each of the successful candidates should possess excellent oral and written communication skills, excellent clinical skills or an excellent undergraduate record of achievement, with demonstrated competencies in working effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team. Relevant work experience, publications and demonstrated research skills will also be taken into consideration. The awards are tenable for a period of three years for Doctorates and are for full-time study only. Applications are open to local and international students, however the scholarship does not cover any tuition fees payable by international studen
</eligibility>

This scholarship is funded by an ARC Linkage-Project grant and will provide support for 3 years on a full-time basis for a research project leading to a PhD. This is part of a national research project designed to carry out comprehensive and in-depth study of the chemical and microbiological stability of polymeric linings in the gas phase of sewer systems.

ISSUE
Domestic wastewater is transported to wastewater treatment plants in concrete pipes. In many instances hydrogen sulphide is generated in the wastewater. The low solubility hydrogen sulphide is released to the headspace of the pipes where it is oxidized to sulphuric acid by sulphide oxidizing bacteria. In addition, the sewer wall on the headspace also has fungi that generate strong carboxylic acids that can chelate metals from the concrete structure. The combination of these factors leads to concrete corrosion. This is a serious problem for the water industry. Thus, the cement piping infra-structure used by the Water Industry is valued at $60 billion and 1% of this sum is used in maintenance each year.

THIS PROJECT
To protect the infrastructure, polymer based permanent coatings, such as epoxies, polyurethanes, etc are used as environmental barriers for concrete pipes exposed to corrosive environments in sewer systems. Furthermore, some of the polymeric coatings are applied as thick layers (~20mm) at great expense. However, the scientific basis to determine the coating thickness is unclear. Currently the understanding of polymer coating degradation within these sour systems is largely empirical. The use of coatings is based more on experience than in science. Optimisation of the performance of sacrificial coatings operating in sour environments, require fundamental research to understand the critical physical and chemical properties of the materials and the effect of sour environments on these properties. The project will create advanced knowledge and innovative technologies to support the Australian water industry in achieving efficient and cost-effective water and waste water utility management.
These projects will be conducted in collaboration with University of Queensland and Newcastle University, CH2Mhill, Department of Chemical Engineering and with the following water companies: Brisbane City Council, Gold Coast Water, SA Water, South East Water Limited, Sydney Water Corporation, United Water and Water Corporation.

    <eligibility>
Applicants should have an Honours 1 or 2A degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Biochemistry or Chemical Engineering. Applicants must be Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or New Zealand citizens.
</eligibility>

Besides its industrial application to raw material supply, microbial process has the potential for extracting metals from metal laden wastes (e.g., e-wastes), metal detoxification of sludge and for recovering chemical and energy resources from carbon based wastes. Biologically assisted metal extraction and degradation of wastes have tremendous potential as extracting and as recycling technologies. The technology is environmentally sound with a huge potential to lower operational cost and energy requirements.
We are inviting students who are interested in pursuing a PhD in mineral processing to join us in developing the fundamental science to create the technology for biologically assisted dissolution of the metallic fractions from mineral oxides and wastes.

This scholarship is funded by an ARC Linkage-Project grant and will provide support for 3 years on a full-time basis for a research project leading to a PhD. This is part of a national research project designed to carry out a comprehensive and in-depth study of the protection mechanisms of sacrificial inorganic coatings against concrete corrosion.

In addition, the sewer wall on the headspace also have fungi that generate strong carboxylic acids that can chelate metals from the concrete structure. The combination of these factors leads to concrete corrosion. This is a serious problem for the water industry. Thus, the cement piping infra-structure used by the Water Industry is valued at $60 billion and 1% of this sum is used in maintenance each year.

THIS PROJECT
Sacrificial coatings are used to protect corroded concrete by minimizing further corrosion prior to rehabilitation. These coatings are of inorganic nature with a wide range of chemical compositions, e.g. calcium aluminate cements, magnesium hydroxide alkaline gels, etc. Their protection mechanism seems to be mainly related to their ability to neutralize acid generated in the sewer atmosphere and also their ability to inhibit the proliferation of bacteria that convert hydrogen sulphide into sulphuric acid. This project will carry out fundamental research to identify and establish relationships between the sewer factors that determine the durability of the various sacrificial coatings. The research will also study the impact of other metabolic products such as carboxylic acids (generated by fungal growth) on durability. The scientific knowledge generated will result in recommendations on how to improve formulations in order to increase durability under various sewer conditions. This will support the Australian water industry in achieving efficient and cost-effective sewers management.

National Research Flagships offer full and top-up Flagship Postgraduate Scholarships to high quality students who are enrolled in a PhD at an Australian university, and who will be working on a project which is directly relevant to a Flagship.

Top-up scholarships will be the norm. Valued at A$7,000 per annum, they are available to PhD students who have gained (or expect to gain) an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) or equivalent scholarship. Please note though that Flagship top-up scholarships are not available to students who have gained an APAI.

In some circumstances full scholarships will be available. These offer a stipend of the equivalent of an APA plus CSIRO's top-up amount of A$7,000 per annum for three years.

International students are eligible to apply but must be able to provide evidence of admission to an Australian university.

PhD students at CSIRO are co-supervised by a university, allowing students to maintain and develop their university connections while being exposed to research in a working environment.

The School of Civil Engineering at The University of Sydney offers a scholarship for a highly qualified student to undertake full-time research leading to a Ph.-D. degree in Environmental Fluid Mechanics.

This research project is aimed to investigate the dynamics of biomineral suspended particle matter (SPM) in turbulently-stirred waters, with a particular focus on the interaction between microparticles made of cohesive mineral and micro-organisms in nutrient-controlled conditions. The objective of this research project is to assess the effect of micro-organisms on the floc fractal properties, aggregation and breakup efficiencies, and the time evolution of the SPM floc size and settling velocity distributions in nutrient controlled conditions. The project foresees a comprehensive experimental investigation in a newly designed facility which makes use of advanced techniques including optical recordings with micro-PIV devices. The project is also aimed at describing biomineral SPM dynamics with mathematical models that will be used in conjunction with the experimental data. The PhD candidate will be supervised by Dr. F. Maggi and Prof. J. Patterson.

The outputs and outcomes of this project have direct application to hydraulics and hydrology, water quality and management, and belong to the wider effort of our Environmental Fluids team to assess the repercussions of human activities and global water and soil changes on the ecosystem.

    <eligibility>
Applicants must hold a MSc degree or equivalent. The PhD candidate is expected to have a strong background in fluid mechanics, physics or mathematics, and be interested in multidisciplinary approaches involving hydrology, biogeochemistry, and nutrient cycling. Furthermore, the candidate has to be willing in developing and operating experimental equipment such as micro-PIV systems, and be skilled in mathematical/numerical modelling.

This opportunity is for commencement in 2010 Semester 1. Both local and international students are welcome to apply, and international student tuition fees will be covered as part of this scholarship. Applicants must also apply for University-wide scholarships where eligible.
</eligibility>

These scholarships are to enable recipients to become active contributors at the interface of good decision making and world class science. The main aim of Wentworth Group Scholarships is to give recipients access to the knowledge and networks of some of Australia’s leading practitioners in influencing public policy through their experience in the natural sciences, economics and public policy. It is not the intention of these scholarships to provide direct support for thesis research, nor can a scholarship be used as a stipend.

The Group has three core tasks:

• Driving innovation in the management of Australia’s land, water and marine

resources;

• Engaging business, community and political leaders in a dialogue to find and

implement solutions to the challenge of environmental stewardship facing the

future of Australian society; and,

• Building capacity by mentoring and supporting young natural resources scientists

and resource economists to develop their skills and understanding of public policy.

The Churchill Trust was established in Australia in 1965 to honour the memory of Sir Winston Churchill by awarding overseas research Fellowships known as 'Churchill Fellowships'.

Since its inception The Churchill Trust has awarded Churchill Fellowships to over 3,300 Australians who, like Churchill, are innovative, filled with a spirit of determination and possess a strong desire to benefit their community.

Churchill Fellowships allow you to design your own research project, travel the world and further your knowledge in your chosen field, before returning to make a real contribution to Australian society.

A Churchill Fellowship is for travel overseas for a minimum of four and a maximum of about eight weeks to conduct research into a topic that you are passionate about. Every application is assessed based on merit, a demonstrated need for the proposed research, the perceived benefit to Australia and a willingness to share the overseas findings and knowledge with the Australian community.

The Chinese Government Scholarship Programme is a series of undergraduate, postgraduate and senior scholar scholarships set up by the Chinese Government to support cooperation and exchange between China and other countries in the fields of education, science, culture, economy and trade. The scholarships are formulated by the Ministry of Education in China (MOEC) and are administered by the China Scholarship Council (CSC), with the aim of strengthening mutual understanding and friendship.

Under this programme, applications are invited from Australian students (including Australian-born Chinese (ABC) students) wishing to undertake studies in China. Students may study in various disciplines, including science, technology, agriculture, medicine, economics, law, management, education, history, liberal arts and philosophy.

Applicants may choose one academic programme and indicate up to three preferred institutions of study, to be taken from the list of Chinese higher education institutions as designated by the MOE. A list of these institutions can be found on the CSC website: http://en.csc.edu.cn/Lianhua/Default.aspx?cid=19 .

Although the majority of Chinese Universities teach their courses in Mandarin, some are available in English.

For this round, the Chinese Government has specified that they wish to focus on five (5) Universities in China for research higher degree students. They are:

Peking University

Tsinghua University

This scholarship is funded by an ARC Linkage-Projects grant and will provide support for 3 years on a full-time basis for a research project leading to a PhD.

The objective of the research project is to study gene expression in hepatitis C virus (HCV) infected individuals and using cell cultures to develop diagnostic markers to predict response to therapy. The project is to:

measure the expression of all genes in peripheral blood immune cells and hepatocytes, and to correlate these with the genetic variation of the response markers (RMs) we have identified and with differences between individuals’ interferon and other viral defence pathways;

acquire new knowledge on the cellular and molecular pathways stimulated by interferon and virus using targeted in-vitro assays from genotyped individuals, to optimise the predictive value of the core marker set, to identify new drug targets for non-responders;

Utilising gene expression patterns to predict response and identify pathogenically important gene networks, using blood samples collected before therapy, after first injection, and at the end of therapy.

The PhD student is to study gene expression in hepatitis C virus (HCV) infected individuals and using cell cultures as part of a project to develop diagnostic markers to predict response to therapy. The student will use molecular biological and statistical bioinformatic approaches to achieve these aims. The specific aims are to:

(i) use gene expression and genomic tools to optimise a biomarker set to predict individual response to interferon for the eradication of HCV;

(ii) from this information, increase the understanding of the basic biology of interferon protection and viral infection, and;

(iii) identify novel therapeutic approaches, or amelioration of existing therapies.

    <eligibility>
Applicants should have an Honours 1 or 2A degree in bioinformatics or related field such as biological sciences, IT, mathematics and statistics. Experience/background in both molecular biology and computation/statistics would be an advantage. International applicants are welcome to apply however the scholarship does not cover any tuition fees payable by international students.
</eligibility>

Help understand the determinants and impact of stigma and discrimination upon people with mental disorder, particularly young people. A full-time postgraduate scholarship, funded by the NHMRC is available for an enthusiastic candidate with a good honours degree in psychology or a related field to undertake research studies leading to a PhD in Psychological Medicine, Psychology or Medical Sciences.

A fully funded opportunity has arisen for a PhD candidate to be involved in a multi-country centre of stigma or discrimination experienced by people with mental disorder. We will addresses key areas of everyday life and social participation, including work, marriage, parenting, housing, leisure, and religious activities through survey and in depth interview. The effect of discriminatory experiences upon the outcome of these disorders will be explored within the context of a larger study of young people with mental disorder and their transition to serious mental illness. The candidate can examine the role of social cognition in understanding stigma, discrimination, self esteem and empowerment through a range of psychophysiological techniques.

A JW and ICM Roderick Scholarship is available for a suitably qualified student with an Honours degree (or equivalent) in Engineering or Science to undertake full time research leading to a PhD degree on the subject of studying and modelling the mechanical behaviour of hexagonal materials during complex loadings.

The project aims to develop a comprehensive crystal plasticity model to predict stress-strain curves and texture evolution of hexagonal close-packed metals during complex loadings. Plastic deformation of hexagonal close-packed (hcp) metals occurs by the activation of different slip and twinning systems depending on temperature, strain rate and loading direction. The mechanical behaviour of these materials becomes even more complex once the loading direction and/or the temperature at which deformation is conducted are changed. Different crystal plasticity models have been developed to reproduce the hardening and texture evolutions of such materials. Although these models capture relatively well the behaviour of hcp metals during simple loadings, they fail to reproduce complex loading behaviours. The PhD student will have the opportunity to characterise the microstructure evolution of various hcp metals and to develop constitutive laws that take into account phenomena due to pre-straining such as the interactions between deformation mechanisms. This model will enable the enhancement of the processing technology of these materials and the discovery of new applications for them.

    <eligibility>
Applicants must have a good degree in engineering or science and an interest in materials science and engineering.
</eligibility>
