Postgraduate Scholarship on Holocene Coral Reef Sedimentology and Stratigraphy

Research Areas:

Postgraduate Research

This scholarship is funded by a joint ARC Discovery grant (2012-2015) between University of Queensland, University of Sydney, and Queensland University of Technology, and will provide support for 3 years on a full-time basis for a research project leading to a PhD. The project will recover cores through the Holocene reef sequence (0-10 ka) in two reefs (Heron and One Tree) in the southern Great Barrier Reef (GBR) and reconstruct reef growth (i.e. geomorphological development), sea level and palaeoclimate histories.

The objective of the advertised position PhD position, to be based at the University of Sydney, is to investigate the response of the GBR to sea level and climate changes over the last 10 ka by generating and linking new observational data (core litholgies, coralgal assemblages, age data etc) with 3D numerical geomorphic and ecologic modelling.

The applicant will participate in both phases of the drilling campaigns in the southern Great Barrier Reef, and work closely with the other national and international partners in the project. The applicant will become a part of the Geocoastal Research Group ( at the University of Sydney, a vibrant research environment where he/she could participate in other field programmes, for example investigating sedimentary processes in the southern GBR.

Applicants should have an Honours 1 degree (or equivalent) in earth and/or environmental science or engineering, and be eligible for the PhD program at the University of Sydney. Experience/background in carbonate sedimentology, coral reef biology and geology and/or numerical modelling of earth systems would be a real advantage. Fieldwork experience will also be considered.

Amount awarded:

The scholarship stipend is $27,651 (tax exempt) per year for 3 three years.
