Description:

The Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies (ITLS) at the University of Sydney Business School are offering a Scholarship to a PhD student whose research is focussed on public transport.

The recipient will be based in the ITLS within the University of Sydney Business School. The Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies is a renowned international centre of thought leadership in the crucially linked areas of transport, infrastructure, logistics and supply chain management.

Eligibility:

Applicants must have an unconditional offer of admission for full-time studies for a PhD with the ITLS within the University of Sydney Business School, and be willing to undertake research in the field of public transport.

Applicants must also hold an Honours degree (First Class or Second Class upper) or a Master's degree in a related field with a substantial research component. The applicant must have demonstrable skills in quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods. 

Selection Criteria

The successful applicant will be awarded the Scholarship on the basis of:

  • academic merit,
  • area of study and research proposal,
  • curriculum vitae,
  • feedback from two academic referees, and
  • a personal statement which demonstrates interest in the area of research and relevant skills in quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods.

Preference will be given to graduates in economics, applied mathematics, civil engineering, quantitative geography, transport planning and engineering. Preference will also be given to those who demonstrate a particular interest in investigating the future role of bus-based services and systems in a metropolitan or rural/regional context. This can include the economics of public transport, bus operations, multimodal service provision, service delivery models and governance frameworks.

The successful applicant will be awarded the Scholarship by the nomination of the relevant research supervisor in the University of Sydney Business School. 

Amount awarded:

The Scholarship will provide an annual stipend allowance of $32,000 per annum (fixed) for up to three years, subject to satisfactory academic performance. The recipient may apply for an extension of up to 6 months.

The Student Services Amenities fee is also provided for a successful applicant, for the same duration as the stipend allowance.

Academic tuition fees will be provided for an international student who obtains a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 85 or equivalent in their prior tertiary studies.

Eligibility for Progression

Progression is subject to passing the annual progress review.
