The UBTECH Sydney Artificial Intelligence Centre within the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies is committed to contributing to the progress of artificial intelligence, to endow machines the capabilities of perceiving, learning, reasoning, and behaving.

An opportunity is available for an outstanding PhD scholar to conduct research in artificial intelligence.


Applicants must have an unconditional offer of admission for full-time studies in a PhD within the School of Information Technologies at the University of Sydney, and be willing to undertake research in the field of artificial intelligence.

Applicants must have a strong degree in Engineering, Science or relevant field. Preference will be given to applicant whose average mark is 85 or above.

Applicants must also demonstrate excellent computer programming skills and have a strong background and knowledge in mathematics.


Selection Criteria:

The successful applicant will be awarded the Scholarship on the basis of:

  • academic merit,
  • area of study and research proposal,
  • curriculum vitae,
  • feedback from two academic referees, and
  • a personal statement which demonstrates their interest in the field of artificial intelligence and background in mathematics and computer programming.

The successful applicant will be awarded the Scholarship on the nomination of the relevant research supervisor(s) in the School of Information Technologies.

Amount awarded:

The Scholarship will provide an annual stipend allowance equivalent to the minimum RTP rate (indexed to the RTP rate on January One each year) for up to three years, subject to satisfactory academic performance. The recipient may apply for an extension of up to 6 months.

The Student Services Amenities Fee is provided for the same duration as the stipend allowance.

Academic course fees are also provided for a successful international applicant, for the same duration as the stipend allowance.

Periods of study already undertaken towards the degree prior to the commencement of the Scholarship, will be deducted from the maximum duration of the Scholarship excluding the potential extension period.

The Scholarship is for commencement in relevant research period in which it is offered for and cannot be deferred or transferred to another area of research.

No other amount is payable. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funding.  


Eligibility for Progression:

Progression is subject to passing the annual progress review.
