Postgraduate Scholarship in Extreme Heat Policy for Sport

An opportunity is available for an outstanding PhD scholar in the area of thermal physiology. The project will assess the current state of knowledge regarding extreme heat policies in sport across Australia and conduct laboratory based studies to develop appropriate algorithms for estimating heat stress risk for various summer sports.

This Scholarship is funded by Tennis Australia.




 a. Applicants must have an unconditional offer of admission or be currently enrolled for full-time studies in a PhD within the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Sydney.

b. Applicants must be willing to undertake research in the field of thermal physiology with an emphasis on developing evidence-based extreme heat policies in sport.

c. Applicants must also hold an Honours degree (First Class) in Exercise and Sport Science, or equivalent.

d. Applicants must have:

   I.          excellent knowledge of human thermoregulatory physiology and human heat balance,

   II.         experience of working with athletes in the above contexts, and

   III.        experience of conducting field- based data collection for heat stress studies.

e. Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, New Zealand Citizen, or Australian Permanent Resident.

f. Applicants must be supervised by Associate Professor Ollie Jay.

Selection Criteria:

a. The successful applicant will be awarded the Scholarship on the basis of:

   I.          academic merit,

   II.         area of study and research proposal,

   III.        curriculum vitae,

   IV.        feedback from two academic referees, and

   V.         a personal statement which demonstrates their knowledge and experience as specified in Clause 2.d.

b. Shortlisted applicants may be requested to attend an interview.


Amount awarded:

The Scholarship will provide a stipend allowance for a fixed value of $23,208 commencing on 1 November 2018 until 31 May 2019, subject to satisfactory academic performance. An extension to this Scholarship may be possible if additional funding is approved.
