Description:

A unique opportunity is available for an outstanding PhD scholar to conduct research into the ethics of infectious disease emergency preparedness and response within the Australian Partnership for Preparedness Research on Infectious Disease Emergencies (APPRISE).

The scholarship is supported by a National Health and Medical Research Council Centre of Research Excellence grant and co-funded by the University of Sydney.

Eligibility:

Eligibility Criteria

a. The Scholarship is offered subject to the applicant having an unconditional offer of admission or being currently enrolled in full-time studies in a PhD in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney.

b. Applicants must undertake research into the ethics of infectious disease emergency preparedness and response within the Australian Partnership for Preparedness Research on Infectious Disease Emergencies (APPRISE). 

c. Applicants must also hold an Honours degree or a Master's degree with a substantial research component in one of the following areas:

  • science,
  • health,
  • public health, or
  • ethics and law.

d. Applicants must have a background in research in at least one of the following areas:

  • public health ethics, and/or
  • infectious diseases.

e. Applicants must be Australian Citizens, Australian Permanent Residents or New Zealand Citizens.

 

Selection Criteria

a. The successful applicant will be awarded the Scholarship on the basis of: 

  • academic merit,
  • curriculum vitae, 
  • recommendations from at least two referees, 
  • relevant skills, knowledge and experience, and
  • a cover letter.

b. Short-listed applicants will be required to attend an interview.

c. The successful applicant will be awarded the Scholarship on the nomination of the relevant research supervisor.

Amount awarded:

a. The Scholarship will provide an annual stipend allowance of $27,082 per annum for up to three years, subject to satisfactory academic performance.

b. The successful recipient may apply for an extension of up to 6 months.
