Title:
Postgraduate Scholarship in Epidemiology/ Applied Biostatistics
Research Areas:
Health Sciences; Sciences & Engineering
Type
Postgraduate Research
Description:
A full-time postgraduate scholarship is available for a suitably qualified candidate with a good academic record to undertake research studies leading to a PhD. The project would suit an individual from a number of different backgrounds (for example: biomedical sciences, medicine, epidemiology, public health or biostatistics) and to some extent the project can be modified to suit the individuals particular research interests and strengths.
The project is to assess the level of a range of novel serum biomarkers, (from early pregnancy), for predicting adverse pregnancy outcomes such as fetal growth restriction, stillbirth and preeclampsia. Advanced statistical methods will be used to assess combinations of biomarkers and antenatally identifiable risk factors and determine which threshold values provide the best (most discriminating) prediction of adverse outcomes. Applicants should have experience in data manipulation and advanced statistical techniques such as multivariable logistic regression, and the ability to analyse large data sets. Candidates should also have an understanding of, or interest in, biomedical scientific methods.
Eligibility:
Applicants should have the equivalent of a good Australian Bachelors Honours degree or a Masters Degree in epidemiology, public health or biostatistics, medicine, biomedical sciences or a research field with a substantial component of data analysis. Applicants must be Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or New Zealand citizens, and proficient in English language. Experience using SAS would be an advantage. The successful applicant will commence their candidature in March 2010. Award of the scholarship is subject to successful enrolment in a PhD in the Faculty of Medicine
Amount awarded:
