Title:
PhD Scholarship in the Virtual Geological Observatory
Research Areas:
Sciences & Engineering
Type
Postgraduate Research
Description:
Applications are invited for two PhD scholarships in Plate Tectonics/Geodynamics working with Professor Dietmar Müller’s EarthByte Group at the School of Geosciences, The University of Sydney, as part of the project ‘The Virtual Geological Observatory: a four dimensional view into the Earth through deep-time data-mining’. The position will focus on building plate kinematic models, including plate deformation, and on linking plate kinematic models to mantle convection, mantle seismic tomography and geological observations, such as palaeogeography, basin stratigraphy, and data constraining rock uplift.
Eligibility:
Successful candidates must have an undergraduate degree and an MSc degree or first-class Honours degree in geology or geophysics .
Selection Criteria:
Applicants should also have:
- an interest to carry out research at the interface between geophysics and geology
- Experience with scripting/programming, especially in an OSX/Unix/Linux environment (e.g. shell scripting, Python or C++)
- expertise in long-term geodynamics/plate tectonics and some aspect of computational/numerical modelling.
- Knowledge of common computer software for data analysis and map making, eg. Matlab, Generic Mapping Tools (GMT).
- An ability to work as part of the team
- Good communication skills, and an ability to present results both orally and in written form
Amount awarded:
$27,222pa for up to three years.
Application guide:
For further information on this opportunity, please contact Professor Dietmar Müller at dietmar.muller@sydney.edu.au.
